LinkedIn is in the process of rolling out impression counts on comments you or your company page writes on the platform to help users ‘gain insights on the impact within your LinkedIn community’.

What’s an impression?

An impression is counted each time someone views a piece of content on social media, in this case, your comment. LinkedIn has shared that this comment impression count will be non-unique, meaning that if a user views your comment multiple times, then that is counted as multiple impressions. Your own views of your comment are also taken into account.

Where can I find my comment impressions on LinkedIn?

Once the update has been rolled out to you, you will be able to see the impression count directly underneath your comments (either as an individual or a page) on the feed or in LinkedIn groups. Only you can see the impression count of your comments as an individual and all page admins will be able to see the impression count of any comments left by your company page.

Why are LinkedIn comment impressions important?

Impressions are important because they give you an overview of the reach and visibility of your content. The more reach and visibility you have outside your current network, the more likely you will reach potential new recruits, clients or grow your connections. This latest roll out from LinkedIn highlights the importance of networking on the platform and using the comment section to grow your brand – whether that’s your personal brand or that of your firm.

Analysing your comment impressions over the period of a few weeks or months, can give you valuable insights into the type of comments that are resonating with your network and which ones are not.

How can I maximise my comment impressions on LinkedIn?

A good rule of thumb is to only comment on a post when you can add something valuable or informative to the conversation.

Commenting for no real reason or leaving a generic comment that doesn’t further the conversation will not create value, can reduce your credibility and in some cases might result in the LinkedIn algorithm prioritising meaningful engagement over your low-effort interactions, limiting your reach and impact.

Here are 4 top tips to dominate in LinkedIn comments:

  1. Share valuable insights – Think about what your comment is adding to the conversation – is it going to keep the conversation going? What is the original author or other users going to gain or learn from reading your comment?
  2. Keep active – You need to regularly engage with others by participating in discussions and responding to comments promptly to increase your visibility.
  3. Use visuals – Why not add an image, video or GIF in your comment to make it more engaging and eye-catching?
  4. Tag other users – Is there someone else who’d have some great insight on a post? Tag them in the comments and introduce them to the author. You’ve kept the conversation going and added value – double win!
