A man who was knocked off his bicycle by a 40-tonne road sweeper has been awarded more than £200,000 in compensation for his injuries.
Dr Glyn Powell, 58, was cycling home from work when the accident happened. The road sweeper’s wing mirror hit the back of Dr Powell’s head with such force that he was knocked unconscious and the injury caused him to suffer a life-threatening stroke.
After the accident, Dr Powell was paralysed for two months. Although some of his mobility has since returned, he continues to suffer the effects of his injury. He tried to return to work part-time but was eventually forced to take early retirement after his physiotherapists said that working was aggravating his condition. He now finds it difficult to walk more than 50 metres unaided and is very unsteady on his feet. He is also unable to undertake simple tasks that require manual dexterity, such as doing up the buttons on a shirt.
Dr Powell was awarded a cash lump sum in excess of £200,000 in an out of court settlement. This was to compensate him for loss of earnings, pain and suffering and to meet the cost of his ongoing care.
If you have been injured in an accident on the roads or in a public place that was not your fault, you could be entitled to compensation.
