£5,500 for Contractor Who Fell Down Manhole

A contractor has won compensation for injuries he sustained when he fell down a manhole.

The accident happened when the man was walking across an outdoor area at the site where he was working. There was a manhole covered by a sheet of plywood. Unaware that there was a hole underneath, he stepped onto the plywood, but it was not strong enough to bear his weight and he fell through, suffering back and neck injuries.

The man was in considerable pain after the accident. He was unable to work and had to take prescription medication.

He brought a claim for compensation against the company responsible for the site. The company should have used a stronger cover for the manhole. Alternatively, there should have been warning signs identifying the hazard.

The company admitted liability and a settlement of more than £5,500 was agreed. This was to compensate the man for the pain and injuries he suffered, as well as loss of earnings and other expenses incurred.
