A trainee teacher whose pelvis was fractured when he was crushed by a reversing school mini-bus has been awarded £365,000 in compensation for his injuries.
John Lewis, 32, was standing in front of his own vehicle in Finsbury Park when the mini-bus reversed into him. His pelvis was shattered and he required months of hospital treatment. The mini-bus driver was later found guilty of driving without due care and attention.
Previously an active man, Mr Lewis now suffers from osteoarthritis, which means that his movement is both painful and restricted. He has been forced to give up his job as a trainee teacher as well as his hobbies, which included sport and the Territorial Army cadets.
Following the accident, Mr Lewis suffered depression and anger on account of what had happened to him. He had been engaged to be married, but the relationship broke up soon after the accident. He has also been told by doctors that he will probably need at least three hip replacements in the future, with the procedures becoming progressively more difficult. He is also likely to have to retire from work at an early age.
Mr Lewis brought a personal injury claim against Islington Council. He was originally offered £100,000 in compensation but turned this down. Subsequently, an out of court settlement was reached of £365,000, thought to be the highest amount paid out in a case of this kind.
