One of the principles we teach in our social media training (opens a PDF) is that of only connecting with people who have either spoken to or met.  It's fine to connect "through" someone else using the "Get introduced through a connection" option.

There are also two lengthy emails that we use after we've accepted someone else's connection invite to make sure they know what we do.

These two are the polite "no" used when refusing a connection or at least flushing out why they want to be connected with you

Thanks for the connection invite, is there something specific you wanted to discuss?  The reason I ask is that I have a policy of only connecting with people who a) I've spoken with or met b) that or they have been referred to me through another LinkedIn contact c) who are not competitors or d) work for a client company.

If we have met or spoken, then please remind me, or feel free to give me a call on 0117 325 0202 or 07976 289015 if there is something specific you'd like to discuss.

These are two versions of the email we send someone using the "Send a message" option after we've accepted their connection invite.  It's a GREAT way of reinforcing what you do.  The first one goes to anyone who is not IN a law firm the second to law firm people.
